Installation Note 62949: SAS® Studio Single-User Edition 3.7 or 3.71 fails to uninstall completely

DetailsAboutRate It

Uninstalling SAS Studio Single-User Edition 3.7 and 3.71 does not completely remove all Windows registry keys. The registry keys that remain then store the initial installation path of SAS Studio (C:\Program Files\SASHOME). This action causes any subsequent re-installations of SAS Studio Single-User Edition to appear in that initial installation path, even after you specify an alternate installation path.

Workaround

To remove SAS Studio Single-User Edition completely so that it can be re-installed to a different path, you must remove the SAS Studio reference in the Windows Registry. Use one of the following methods.

Method #1: Use a Microsoft Tool

  1. Uninstall SAS.
  2. Download and run the Microsoft tool from the following support article: "Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed."
  3. Remove SAS Studio.
  4. Delete the installation directory if you have not already done so. The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\SASHOME, but the path might be different for your site.
  5. (If applicable) Re-install SAS and SAS Studio.

Method #2: Manually Uninstall the SAS® Studio Reference

  1. Locate the GUID for the SAS Studio Single-User Edition product. You can locate the GUID either from the Windows Registry or by using PowerShell.
    • Windows Registry: Open the Windows Registry editor and navigate to this location:

         Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SAS Institute Inc.\SAS Studio Single User Edition\version

Note: version in the path indicates the SAS Studio version that is installed on your machine (3.7 or 3.71).

Double-click the ProductId registry entry and copy the text that is in the Value data field. An example of the value is {1225F54A-27AA-4701-A6DB-DF8E1F0A1CD5}.

  • PowerShell: Open PowerShell and submit the following command:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Product -Filter "Name like 'SAS Studio%'" | Format-Table IdentifyingNumber, Name, LocalPackage -AutoSize

Review the output and locate the value in the IdentifyingNumber column for the version of SAS Studio Single-User Edition that you want to uninstall. In this example, the value is {1225F54A-27AA-4701-A6DB-DF8E1F0A1CD5} for the 3.7 version:

PS C:\WINDOWS\system32> Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_Product -Filter "Name like 'SAS Studio%'" | Format-Table IdentifyingNumber, Name, LocalPackage -AutoSize

IdentifyingNumber                      Name                                     LocalPackage
-----------------                      ----                                     ------------
{1225F54A-27AA-4701-A6DB-DF8E1F0A1CD5} SAS Studio 3.7 Single-User Edition       C:\WINDOWS\Installer\488198a0.msi

  1. Launch a Windows command prompt as an administrator. Submit the following command and use the GUID value that you found in Step 1 where indicated:

       msiexec /uninstall GUID

Here is an example of this command using the GUID value from Step 1:

       msiexec /uninstall {1225F54A-27AA-4701-A6DB-DF8E1F0A1CD5}

  2. Delete the installation directory if you have not already done so. The default installation directory is C:\Program Files\SASHOME, but the path might be different for your site.
  3. (If applicable) Re-install SAS and SAS Studio.
